Tick Education
Know your enemy — the basics, prevention, and answers to common questions.
What are ticks?
Ticks are small, spider-like parasites that attach to skin and feed on blood. They range from poppy-seed size (nymphs) to apple-seed size (adults) and are found in grass, brush, leaf litter, and wooded areas.
When is tick season?
Ticks are most active in warm months — roughly April through September — but adults can be active any day above freezing, including mild winter days. Nymphs, the stage most likely to transmit disease, peak in late spring and early summer.
Where do ticks live?
Tall grass, brush, leaf piles, wood edges, and shaded, humid ground. They don't jump or fly — they 'quest' by waiting on vegetation with legs outstretched and grab on as you brush past.
